A homeowner called St. Paul police to the vehicle of Christian Damon Derek Stoner, 40, who was found beside an empty bottle of alcohol with his bare feet on the dashboard while his 1-year-old daughter cried behind him.
His young son had been wondering outside in tears before a passing woman came to his rescue, just after the sun had gone down, according to The Star Tribune.
He ‘was crying so hard that I could not understand him,’ the anonymous responder described to the Star Tribune.
‘He was beside himself. I asked if he was OK, and he said no,’ the woman said, described as choking back tears herself. ‘I asked, ‘do you need help?’ He said yes.’
The small boy told the woman that since picking him and his sister up that day, his father had driven around pulling over at random locations before landing in the responder’s neighbourhood.
The boy had been asking his father to drive them to their mother’s and cried with his sister of being hungry.
Police responding said they abandoned field sobriety tests outside of a breath test given due to worries the man would fall and hurt himself.
With his eyes red and described as glassy, he had a blood alcohol level of .289 per cent.
That’s more than three times the legal driving limit.
Held in the back of a police car until their mother arrived, the two children were transferred safely into her custody.
The father does not have a previous crime record aside from a speeding offense.
Today he faces a third-degree charge of driving while impaired as well as a second-degree charge from refusing to submit to a chemical test.
Both are gross misdemeanours.
His next court appearance is scheduled for January 27.
