Melissa Mazzeo, 51, of Long Island’s Sunnyside Terrace, climbed into the freestanding metal box in an alleyway Saturday afternoon but became trapped and suffocated police believe when the door dropped on her neck.
Hearing her cries for help, a witness reported the woman to a next door bagel shop, alerting a maintenance worker to the scene.
That worker, Peter Schenck, said it was too late when he arrived, finding the woman unresponsive.
‘Two hands and a head. That’s it. Just out the door,’ Mr Schenck told SILive. ‘Not a sight to see.’
It took police and rescue workers several hours to remove the woman before the lock was finally cut.
According to a spokesperson for the New York Police Department the woman has been previously spotted climbing into clothing drop boxes to steal clothes.
Mr Schenck said that the woman often had a shopping cart and a hook with her to remove the donated clothes.
She had also been banned from the bagel shop due to theft according to the employees and had a petit larceny charge as well as one for criminal possession of stolen property from a November incident.
A court appearance for those charges was scheduled for May.
An autopsy is planned for today.
